Solid State Physics

My research focuses on electronic transport in materials such as photovoltaics, two-dimensional materials, and polymer-nanoparticle composites, using Scanning Probe Microscopy and other methods. I enjoy teaching a wide range of courses, including Oscillations and Waves, Junior Laboratory, and Energy and Sustainability. I also garden, hike, and occasionally foster cats and kittens. Leo is now at Columbia University for the second half of the 3-2 combined engineering program, studying Electrical Engineering.

Joaquin is currently pursuing his PhD in physics at Yale.

Outside of the lab, he loves playing frisbee, billiards, and video games.

Anatalya Piatigorsky '24

After a year as a post-baccalaureate researcher in Electrical Engineering at Portland State University, Anatalya has joined their program as a student, and is currently pursuing a Master's degree. Thesis: "Experiments in Photon Propulsion: A Lab-Based Investigation into the Mechanism Behind Solar Sailing."

Natalie Rogers ’24
After graduation, Natalie spent a productive semester as a post-baccalaureate researcher in our lab (thank you Natalie!). She is now studying for a PhD in materials science at Dartmouth.

Outside of the lab, Natalie enjoys climbing, reading, and cooking. Thesis: "Illuminating MoS₂: Characterizing mm-Size Exfoliated 2D MoS₂ for Electroluminescence."

Daniel Collier ’26
In the lab, Daniel worked on 2D materials, focusing on separating and stacking graphene layers. Outside of the lab, he loves playing Ultimate Frisbee and piano, as well as reading and hiking! Daniel is currently a student at University of Oregon.

Amelia Schaeffer ‘23
Amelia is pursuing a PhD in Applied & Engineering Physics at Cornell University.

Amelia was a Chemistry-Physics major at Reed. Outside of the lab she enjoys baking, hiking, and rock climbing. Thesis: "Striking Gold: An Atomic Force Microscopy Study of Gold Nanoparticle-Polymer Interfaces"

Bhavana Panchumarthi ‘23
After Reed, Bhavana received a master’s degree from King’s Â鶹ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ, University of Cambridge on a Sterling fellowship. She is now pursuing her PhD in quantum optics at Northwestern. Thesis: "Dielectric Response of Bulk hBNA."

Katha Rajan ‘23
Katha helped set up the lab from the very beginning, and graduated with a Physics major in 2023. "I am currently working in experimental physics and geophysics at the University of Washington. Outside of the lab, I love to read, sketch, gym, and hang out with my cat!"
