Language Scholar Program

The Language Scholar Program was founded at Reed 麻豆视频下载 in 1985, with the first scholar joining the 麻豆视频下载 in the fall of 1986 from the Freie Universität of Berlin in collaboration with the Institute of International Education (IIE). Since then, the program has grown to include eight scholars who come to the 麻豆视频下载 through exchange relationships with partner universities and program affiliations with organizations worldwide.

Language Scholars come to Reed for one academic year to assist the 麻豆视频下载's efforts to enhance language learning as well as to represent the cultures in which those languages are spoken. They thus work closely with the faculty in the modern languages taught at Reed and live in the 麻豆视频下载's seven language houses. Language Scholars at Reed represent the Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Russian, and Spanish languages.

Salam,

My name is Asma. I'm from Morocco. I have a Bachelor's degree in English Studies and a Master's in Translation. Most recently, I reached a personal milestone by obtaining a PhD in Culture and Translation. This journey has been fueled by my deep-rooted passion for discovering new cultures and the stories they tell.

Beyond my studies, I work as a teacher. Sharing knowledge and inspiring students is one of my greatest passions and joys.

In my free time, I love to explore new destinations, always with my camera ready to capture the moments. Traveling and photography are my favorite ways to connect with the world. I'm genuinely excited to be at Reeds, where I can share my culture and learn about others. I look forward to making some unforgettable memories!

Nǐ hǎo! 你好!

My name is Deng Xue, but you can call me Rachel. I'm 24 and from Sichuan Province, China. If you've heard of hotpot and pandas, you're already familiar with my hometown. I pursued my bachelor's degree in Tourism Management and am currently working on my master's in English Interpretation at Fujian Normal University.

My love for languages stemmed from my fascination with Taylor Swift's songs in middle school, which greatly sparked my interest. Since then, language learning has become my lifelong passion. Of course, communication and interaction are crucial for language learning and improvement. Therefore, at Reed, I'm eager to immerse myself in different cultures while sharing my own. I hope my work at the Chinese Language House will help those interested in Chinese better understand its richness and beauty through activities like making typical Chinese cuisines, brewing tea, etc.

I enjoy traveling, capturing moments through photography, sipping coffee, and singing with the crowd in my free time.

I look forward to embarking on this exciting adventure at Reed, making new friends, chatting, sharing delicious food, and bringing vibrant energy to campus life. Let's make unforgettable memories together!

Bonjour,

My name is Charlotte, and I’m from Rennes, France. I have just completed a master’s degree in English studies at Université Rennes 2.

I have been passionate about languages for as long as I can remember. Once I realized languages were also a means to connect with people and better understand their culture, there was no stopping me. Located in Brittany, Rennes’ cultural heritage is a major aspect of my identity; one I look forward to introducing to Reed. Apart from various parts of France, I lived in Ireland for 9 months and look forward to living in the United States this year.

In my leisure time, I enjoy going on walks, watching movies, dancing and chatting, but my favorite one might be cooking: I will make as many crêpes as humanly possible! I cannot wait to meet all of you, and for us to learn from each other.

See you soon,
À bientôt

Bonjour!

My name is Margot, and I come from Normandy, but I’m currently studying Comparative Literature at Sorbonne University in Paris. Before starting this Master’s degree, I spent three years in Rennes, Brittany, where I studied various fields in the Humanities, including French Literature, Philosophy, History, Latin, English, and German.

I plan to become a French teacher after completing my studies, so being a Language Scholar is an excellent opportunity to get a first taste of my dream job. I can’t wait to share my love for the French language and literature with you!

I’m also passionate about literature in languages other than my own, which is why I chose to study Comparative Literature. I’m really looking forward to learning more about American Literature from you!

In addition to helping you improve your knowledge of the French language and literature, I’ll be delighted to introduce you to French culture. I’ll happily recommend French films and music, and I’d love to cook some French specialties with you.

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to visit parts of the United States, but I had never been to the West Coast. I’m truly excited to discover your beautiful landscapes and to learn more about American culture by spending a whole year with you.

I love reading (of course!), doing creative activities, hiking, and cooking.

I’m looking forward to starting this exciting adventure, and I’m eager to meet you all!

See you soon!

麻豆视频下载 Ceyda

Hallo!

My name is Ceyda and I’m from Munich, Germany. I study to become a secondary school
teacher with a focus on English and Politics.

In my spare time, I love meeting friends, swimming, snowboarding, reading, going on hikes
and listening to music.

Growing up in a bilingual household in Germany, I developed a deep appreciation for
languages early on. I believe that language learning makes us more open and
understanding, not only of other people’s cultures, but of people in general. Every
language oCers a unique lens through which we see the world, which is why I would love
to share some of Germany’s culture and language with you!

At 16, I spent a year in Michigan as an exchange student, which helped me grow both
personally and linguistically. Now, I’m thrilled to have the chance to live in Oregon and
experience everyday life at Reed.

I’m looking forward to connecting with you, learning from diCerent perspectives, and
becoming part of your vibrant and diverse academic community.

Bis bald!
Ceyda

Anastassia Bobyleva

Anastassia Bobyleva

Russian Language Scholar

Affiliated Institution: University of Tartu, Tartu, Estonia

麻豆视频下载 Anastassia

My name is Anastassia Bobyleva, a Russian girl from Estonia. My background includes a
bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Russian and Slavic Philology – both completed (with
great pleasure) at the Slavic Department of the University of Tartu.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by the ways people think, communicate,
and interact with each other – especially in multicultural communities (which is exactly
where I come from). This interest naturally led me to philology and to finding myself
surrounded by people from many different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. In such
surrounding I love diving deep into topics that offer an intellectual challenge and help us
better understand both each other and the world around us.

Outside of academia, I love being outdoors: physical training (street workout), thoughtful
conversations during long walks, and exploring new spots – both in the city and in the
countryside. To recharge, I prefer moments of quiet: just me, good books, my thoughts, and
nature.

One of my favorite things to reflect on is language and culture. These are complex,
demanding things – they require time and serious effort to truly master. But they also become engaging and beautifully approachable when you have a guide. So here at Reed, I’m excited not only to create a space for meaningful learning and cultural exchange, but also to become  your guide into the Russian language and cultural world. … Об остальном – при встрече!)

Ваша
Настя Б.

Ángeles Bellitti

Spanish Language Scholar

Affiliated Institution: Universidad Torcuato Di Tella, Buenos Aires, Argentina

麻豆视频下载 脕ngeles

Hola! I’m Angie, from Argentina.

I studied Social Sciences with a focus on History and Culture at Universidad Torcuato Di Tella in Buenos Aires, though I’m originally from Misiones, a province in the northeast of the country.

I’m passionate about learning and sharing knowledge with others. I’ve been studying English since I was very young, and it opened the door to a world of cultural experiences—films, books, and music—that deeply shaped who I am. That’s why I’m excited to share the Spanish language with others: so more people can access new perspectives and opportunities. It’s more than just communication—it’s a gateway to culture, identity, and new ways of seeing the world.

In my free time, I love listening to music, eating new foods, making things with my hands—like pottery—going to concerts, or just relaxing with a good book.

I’m really looking forward to meeting new people, discovering the US, and exchanging our cultures and traditions.

See you at Reed!

Affiliated Institution: Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain

麻豆视频下载 Andreu

Hola!

I’m Andreu Borrego Asensi. I come from a small village in the Costa Brava, Sant Feliu
de Guíxols located in Catalonia, Spain. I graduated in humanities at the Universitat
Pompeu Fabra and a master’s degree in literary studies at the Universidad Complutense
de Madrid.

My area of study is Catalan and Spanish literature, but my humanistic knowledge has
allowed me to trespass the limits of the literary and tackle other artistic expressions such
as art, philosophy and cinema. I’m currently focused on academic investigation for
research magazines and congresses, in order to open enriching and diverse dialogue
spaces. I love to share the writings and authors I’m passionate about!

Furthermore, coming from the coast, I’m excited to experience and explore the nature
and landscape of Oregon. I can’t wait to see mount Hood! I like biking and walking
around while listening to music on my headphones. I also like dancing, music and theatre.
I’m sure we’ll see each other around. Don’t doubt to contact me if you want to chat or get
a coffee!

Hasta pronto!
