The Carnegie-Gaither Junior Fellows Program application usually opens in mid-October. When they open the application, they will release the listing of which of their projects are hiring junior fellows through this cycle and any language requirements. Before applying internally spend some time on the to get a sense of the different research projects and the kind of work that they do.
As a program for which Reed 麻豆视频下载 plays an endorsing role, there is a two-tiered application process. The first stage is to apply by the internal application deadline. Fellowships staff in the Center for Life Beyond Reed will review applications and select up to two nominees. If your application is nominated, you would then complete the application process with assistance from CLBR Fellowships by the external deadline in early January.

Application Steps
Application materials, letter of recommendation, and the waiver form, are all required for the internal application.
Carnegie-Gaither Junior Fellows Program Application Materials
Download and read this year's program bulletin and FAQ. This is where you'll find the list of programs or projects for this year, and the additional requirements for each program, if any. There's nothing to submit in this step, but you'll need this information.
Application Materials
Please submit the following items as pdf documents to clbrfellowships@reed.edu as attachments to your email:
-
A document listing the following information:
-
Your name.
-
Name of the program to which you're applying .
-
Languages: list up to five languages you know, along with your proficiency level (basic, intermediate, advanced, or native/near native).
-
-
An essay (personal statement) of up to two pages; double spaced. The personal statement should discuss why you are applying for this job, what you hope to learn from it, how you think your experience and working style would serve you well as a research assistant, and why you have chosen to apply for the program you are applying for.
-
Resume/C.V. (preferably 1-2 pages).
-
An unofficial Reed transcript (you can download one yourself via these instructions).
-
A writing sample of three to five pages, double spaced. This sample may be either a full-length piece that falls within the size range or an excerpt from a longer work.
- The writing sample must be accompanied by a brief explanation of no more than half of one page explaining why the student chose that sample. The explanation is not included in the three to five page limitation noted above.
- The writing sample can be on any topic. However, they recommend that the student choose a writing sample that is relevant to the program they are applying for, either in subject matter or style of analysis. For more information on what each Carnegie research program is working on, they recommend visiting the of the Carnegie website.
- A works cited page is not required. However, in-text citations (either footnotes/endnotes or parenthetical) should be included with the writing sample.
Letters of Recommendation
We will need one internal letter of recommendation from anyone whom the applicant feels can best speak to their abilities as a potential James C. Gaither Junior Fellow to be sent to clbrfellowships@reed.edu by the internal application deadline. The letter writer should be able to speak directly to the applicant’s ability to write and support research projects. Make sure to give your recommender several weeks notice and read our guidance on requesting letters of recommendation.
Junior Fellows provide essential research assistance to their senior scholars. This often requires sophisticated judgment and independent work. Recommendations will therefore be especially useful if they speak to the student's analytical and writing skills, self-discipline and maturity, and, where relevant, subject matter expertise.
Note that if you are nominated, you will need two letters of recommendation for the final application.
Waiver
You will need to complete this online waiver form as the final step in submitting your internal application.
Applicants submitting application materials electronically by email will generally receive a confirmation within 24 hours. If you do not receive a confirmation during this time, please follow up with the Center for Life Beyond Reed at clbrfellowships@reed.edu to ensure that the application was successfully submitted.
Next Steps
Nomination decisions should be communicated within one to two weeks of the internal deadline.
If you are nominated, you should continue work on your essay, and let your recommenders know that you'll need a final recommendation letter from them. Final recommendation letters will be due directly to CLBR via clbrfellowships@reed.edu prior to the national deadline in early January. CLBR will let you know when final materials are needed, and we'll submit your final application for you in Carnegie's online application system.
If you are selected as a finalist, there will be a phone/video interview.
